Reduction in Water Usage

The Water Balance exercise that was carried out at Citrosuco's units provided the basis for the creation of the company's Water Resource Master Plan (WRMP) which established action plans for the reduction, reuse and recycling of water. The objective is to reduce the needs of fresh water intake and to discharge treated effluent in a manner that is feasible from economic, social and environmental perspectives.

In the Matão (SP) plant, a portion of the water leaving the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is now being reused to wash floors and irrigate gardens. At the Santos (SP) port terminal, the treated effluent is being used in the cooling towers, thus reducing the fresh water intake. In addition to these initiatives, the nature of our business activities includes the extraction of the water inherent in the fruit during the juice concentration process. This extracted water can then be reused.  This water, referred to as "plant condensate", is used for steam generation, washing fruit and cleaning equipment and installations in the processing plants.

In the case of our agricultural activities, the majority of the area under cultivation is not irrigated. In those areas where the groves are irrigated, the drip system is used.  This system, which is considered to be one of the most efficient available today, optimizes the use of both water and fertilizer by applying them in a controlled manner directly to the tree's root system.
